The Super 2’s went into this local derby with Southend 2’s eager to put into practice the work they had done at training. They started the game of in explosive fashion scoring after just 3 minutes. An attack down the right lead to the ball ending up at the far post and Neve Harrison was on hand to slot the ball home. S&B remained on top but Southend had their share of the chances with Denise fending any shots off. However, it was Southend who managed to score just before half time to go into the break all level.
The training work on short corners at both ends of the pitch was paying off with chances being created and thwarting Southend’s play. Five minutes into the second half S&B did well to keep the ball in the circle and when it broke to Ella White in front of goal, she calmly lifted the ball into the roof of the net.
S&B deserved to lead by more but the defence and midfield had to stand firm during the closing stages to prevent Southend equalising and the final whistle blew for a 2-1 win.
